A little less than a year ago I became obsessed with macramé. Macramé is a form of textile that is created solely my knotting techniques. It’s been really popular over the last few years and although I didn’t have any macramé art, I’ve always liked the like of it. I can be crafty and I definitely enjoy learning new things so I decided to teach myself. Here was the first piece I ever made –
This was made using the alternating square knotting technique. It’s fun to look back on it now to see how far I’ve come since then! Early on I also learned the half hitch knot and double half hitch knot. Most macramé pieces are based off of those 3 types of knots. I primarily learned through Youtube videos, reading blogs and forums, macramé Facebook groups, and just learning as I went. Trial and error. Macramé can be a pretty forgiving craft because for the most part you can undo the knots to fix any mistakes. It’s usually a pain in the ass but at least it’s an option!
I started off buying a macramé beginners kit off Amazon. As I learned more I figured out what the right things were to buy and started purchasing things separately. I’ve done a bunch of price checking and for macramé supplies Amazon seems to be the best bet, and also very convenient if you sell your products and need something last minute. Joann Fabrics has a very poor selection of macramé supplies. Michaels is much better but still does not even compare to Amazon. Craft stores also tend to be more expensive and not sell in bulk.
What I love most about macramé is how once you get good, you can start by following a design or pattern and then make it your own in so many different ways. I love adding my own spin on things. I have considered making video tutorials for some of my projects. It’s something I’ll be considering for the future, but for now there are lots of great videos and resources already out there. And I’m still learning!
Picking up a new hobby was a good experience for me and couldn’t have come at a better time. I picked it up around the time I was going through all the medical testing and procedures to figure out that I ultimately have cancer. It gave me a healthy place to channel my thoughts, time and energy. It also opened the door for making an Etsy shop to sell my products and make some money. I did surprise myself that I stuck with it because I get easily frustrated with myself if I’m not the best right away. And I definitely was not the best right away, lol. But luckily I stuck it out 💕
Hopefully sharing some of how I got started is helpful to someone out there looking for a new hobby! It’s possible that in the future I’ll make a macramé guide for beginners if there’s enough interest. For now, I’ll keep it simple 😉
Please check out my Etsy shop as well as the Macrame page on my website to see more of my pieces 😊 I make a wide variety of things and am always open to personalizing things as well. Look below for some of my favorite pieces I’ve made so far.
